Jem has a healthy respect for Atticus since the beginning of the book. Jem refuses to let his father think less of him. When Jem goes to fetch his pants from the Radley house he tells Scout,

"I--it's like this Scout," he muttered. "Atticus ain't ever whipped me since I can remember. I wanta keep it that way... We shouldn'a done that tonight, Scout."

When Jem finds out his dad is actually good at something manly (he shoots the rabid dog) Jem says,

I reckon if he'd wanted us to know it, he'da told us. If he was proud of it, he'da told us... "Naw, Scout, it's something you wouldn't understand... Atticus is a gentlman, just like me!"
