Jem is growing up and has great respect for his father. Childhood deals and "obligations" fade as one, like Jem ,matures. I think that Jem increasingly has it together, so to speak. I recall once telling my parents about my sister staying out past her curfew because I knew my parents didn't approve of her friend. In the long run it was probably better for my sister that she was grounded.
