Growing up in Maycomb is portrayed as an adventure. Children played outside, made up games, got into mischief, and didn't go home until they were expected for dinner. Familes had dinner together, knew and socialized with their neighbors, looked out for each other, and treated each other like family. Schools taught reading, writing, and arithmetic and embraced new teaching methods regularly.... some worked, some didn't. A number of children didn't attend school because they had to help their familes at home.
