At the end of the chapter, the hole in the tree has been cemented by Mr. Radley. It's at this point in the story that Jem puts two and two together, realizing that Boo is the one eaving them gifts. By the way Jem stands out on the porch, we can infer he also comes to undertand that Boo isn't the only one keeping himself isolated from the outside world. When Jem goes back into the house, Scout notes that he looks as if he's been crying.
