Scout and Jem have a private family life that is enlightened and educated compared to the average Maycomb citizen. Atticus teaches them to think and feel with intelligence and empathy. They are constantly learning at home through both books and through the wisdom of their father. Racism is a concept that both kids struggle to understand.
