Atticus communications with scout

Why would Atticus let scout overhear him tell jack that he wishes that scout go to him with questions than listening to the townsfolk instead of just telling her that?

Atticus knows Scout is mature enough to interpret what they are talking about. He wants Scout to understand the gravity of the situation and to internalise it in a similar way that she understood the mob outside the jail.
