One way in which Atticus displays courage is by taking Tom Robinson's case and defending him. Atticus understands that by defending Tom Robinson, he is not only putting himself in what might possibly be a dangerous position, but that he is setting up his family for criticism as well. Atticus' courage is not only displayed within the realm of his profession, but by the way he goes above and beyond the job of a lawyer when he sits outside of the jail, putting himself between Tom and the lynch mob.
