it is by the series of nocturnal events that jem realizes that maycomb county was rather different. in fact he realized that his father's teachings were rather the opposite. he was aware that his town citizens were mostly gossipers and rumors used to spread within a short period of time. right after the event of aunt alexandra calling walter 'trash' jem took scout away to console her and give her a talk. he confirmed with scout that he once believed that their county consisted of only one type of folk. but then he divided them because none of the four divisions agreed to one term.

he then clarified that these were the reasons for arthur (boo) for hiding within the safety and comfort of his prison rather than taking part in the on going activities in his surrroundings. he using two sentences clearly brought out his meaning that boo was taken back by the strange incidents taking place. firstly he reprimandedof coming out because of the strange rumors about him. secondly he clearly did not stand in the favor of racism. he clearly wanted a peaceful friendly enviornment rather than the one he was caught in.
