9. Why did Jem destroy Mrs. Dubose's flower garden? Do you think Jem's punishment was fair and appropriate? Explain.

Mrs. Dubose insulted Atticus. The punishment was classic Atticus. Reading to the old lady was a restorative thing rather than punishment. Jem and Scout got to know Mrs. Dubose better and was able to even appreciate her in a different way.
