Why does Atticus take Tom Robinson's case?

Atticus takes Tom's case because it's the right thing to do. People can say what they like, but every man deserves a good defense, even if he's black and people will be angry because of it. Atticus said that if he hadn't taken the case he couldn't "hold up my head in town."
