situations where characters step into others shoes
Scout explains Walter's behavior with a succinct, "He's a Cunningham." But Miss Caroline does not know the history of that family, so she does not understand, even after Scout explains in greater detail the Cunninham refusal to take charity. When she complains to Atticus that Miss Caroline had punished her, Atticus tells her to step into Miss Caroline's shoes . . . Scout's story does seem a bit outlandish if you don't know Maycomb. Atticus helps Scout to see why Miss Caroline didn't believe her. He also tells her to give Miss Caroline some time to get adjusted.
Scout also tries hard to understand Jem when he won't tell anything about retrieving his pants. She figures if she had been on the Radley lot alone that night as Jem had, she would be dead, so she decides to stop pestering Jem about the incident.
