what mistake did tom robinson make when saying sry to mayella

He said he felt sorry for her.  No one at that time could understand why a Negro--the "lowest of the low" could feel sorry for a member of the privileged race.  Tof eel sorry for someone, we must feel more fortunate or somehow "above" that person.  No Negro was allowed to feel this.
