The last page is really right. Atticus is always there for his children. Maycomb is not. Alexandra is not. Even Scout and Jem are not always there for each other. The neighbors are not. The school is not. But Atticus is always there. A good father.

What I like about the ending is the parallels between the book Attius happened to pick up off Jem's shelf and the incidents of Lee's novel. Scout summarizes Jem's book and says something like, "...it turns out he never did all those bad things and--he was real nice, Atticus." The conversation shifts mid-sentence from the book to Arthur Radley. Harper Lee does this a few times in the book. Brilliant.

I thought the ending couldn't have been more fitting for the novel. It shows how Atticus is always there for his children and sort of ends in a continuing happily ever after. That's why the last sentence hints at how their life is going to carry on - '...would be there when Jem waked up in the morning.' - and yet contains a note of finality.
