Why might London have chosen not to give the man in the story a name?

I think the man represents all men to a certain extent. London wants to show us the fragility of even the strongest of men when it comes to nature. A human being can do okay as long as he/she respects the elements. When this man disrespects the elements he, like any man, will die.
