The climax of the story occurs after the man builds the second fire, which is promptly put out by snow falling from the branch of a tree. The man's condition, the wetness of his outer wear, in addition to his inability to dry anything seals his fate. When he cannot rekindle the fire..... his future becomes hopeless.
