When was the trail last used? Why may this be important?

I don't think London gives us an exact time. He does tell us that,

"The trail was faint. A foot of snow had fallen since the last sled had passed over, and he was glad he was without a sled, travelling light."

London always measured things in natue's terms rather than man's terms.
