I think it's the man's stupidity more than bad luck. All the natural signs pointed to the man stopping and making camp. Even his dog lagged behind in a vain attempt to clue his master into the danger of proceeding further. The man knew hot springs melted the snow by the river making the ice thin. So, no it wasn't bad luck. This guy was pushing his luck, something like this was bound to happen.
