What traps is the man careful to avoid?

The newcommer man fears quite a few traps. I'm going to list them so it is more clear.Much of what the man did went against the advice of the "old timer".

-he is afraid about falling through the ice. His feet will get wet which is a quick way to hypothermia.

-he ventured out into the wilds alone.

-does not heed his doggy. The dog really does not want to go on.

-man lights a fire under a snowy tree which puts the fire out from the wind.
