The mistake that the man makes in the second half of the story, is that he builds his fire with his last match under a tree. While the fire initially catches hold, it also melts the snow on the branches above the fire. Once the snow melts and falls on the fire and puts that fire out, the man has no more choices. He can no longer build a fire; without it he will freeze to death.

He does not make camp and dry himself out.

The first mistake that the man make is not to listen to the the old timer, that not to go outside at fifty below especially alone he made both of the these mistakes.

The second misktake he make is that he burn the fire under the tree where their was snow, and where the snow can easily melt and fall on the fire. The third mistake that the man make is he used all the matches to burn just one fire.
