The dog shows many behaviors that are instinctive throughout the story. One instinctive behavior was its desire for warmth. The second section of the sentence below illustrates instinct.

"The dog had learned fire, and it wanted fire, or else to burrow under the snow and cuddle its warmth away from the air."
