What character was the voice of reason that the man keeps thinking of?

The man often reflects about the advice given to him by the Old Man fro Sulpher Creek. The man often smirks when he thinks he is outwitting nature and, by extension, the old-timer's advice. By the end of the story, the man realizes that the old-timer was right.
