The man's last attempt at fire fails. The snow from the tree melts and puts it out. The man tries to light another but fingers fail. He tries to kill his dog and use him as a sleeping bag. The dog won't come near him. The man freezes to death. The realism lies in the thematic purpose of the story. The man failed to heed the warning signs of nature. He went forward out of hubris (pride) and paid the consequences, Yes, I found the ending very realistic.
