The man has many warnings that he should not have been travelling or, at the very least, stop and make camp. His spittle (spit) freezes before it hits the ground. His husky knows better than to travel in such cold: it tries to stay behind. The man cannot feel his hands and feet. The man almost loses his foot to frost bite when he gets it wet.
