The man is prideful at the beginning of the story. He refuses to listen to others and believes himself invincible. In the middle of the story, he has some bad luck. He, none-the-less, still believes himself to be right and doesn't let his setbacks bother him. By the end of the story, the man realizes he was wrong not to listen to the advice of those more experienced.... he doesn't, however, mean it for long. It isn't until he's running through the snow to his death that he understands the repurcussions of his actions.
