The man's first fire is started successfully. He builds his fire and eats his lunch. The second fire isn't as successful, but it is essential. The man has fallen through the snow. His appendages are in danger of freezing, and the man finds it difficult to light.... but he also makes a bad decision and builds the fire under a snowy tree. The snow snuffs out the flames. The third fire was also a loss. and the man.... hands numb, cannot light another. This decision was important because he no longer has any matches.... he no longer has any feeling in his hands.... he no longer has a chance to dry out.
