Why does London always emphasize how cold it is, and how the man has never felt such cold before?

The cold is a very real antagonist in the story. The man does not understand cold and nature is indifferent to the man's ignorance. He presses on despite the cold and London reminds us that the man is but fragile in cold such as this.
