If some elements in the story would have changed. What possible endings could have happen?

Had a few of the elements changed, yes, I believe that the ending could have been different. One scenario, the man would have stayed put and respected the experience of the old timer rather than rushing off. Another scenario, the man wouldn't have fallen in the water, been delayed, and he might have survived.
