THrough hundreds of years of evolution the dog's instincts tell it to stop and not go further into the cold. The dog lags back whimpering. The dog is trying in his own doggy way to tell this guy to stop and make camp. The man thinks he can beat the cold. He believes that by forging on, he can cheat nature at her own game.
