how does the man behave in relation to his environment?

The man understands the environment but he lacks "imagination". This means the man fails to comprehend what nature can do to him should he disrespect her warnings. He knows how to survive to a point. It is only when he makes stupid decisions that he fails to relate to the dangerous possibilities.
