The man's judgments were based on ignorance and the arrogance that he couyld beat the weather and get to where he was going. The dog, of course, knows instinctively that in order to survive it has to get out of the cold and find shelter. This dog of course knows where the humans are at the end of the trail..... but as you go through the story, you see that the dog doesn't want to leave the fire, walks carefully through the snow, and burrows whenever possible. The dog also instinctively knows when its life is in danger.
