Do you find yourself rooting for the man or the dog? Why? Do you think this is the author's intention?

I think the dog is a more sympathetic character than the man. The man ignores nature's warnings while the dog does his best to heed them. The man makes his dog walk over thin ice and finally attempts to kill it to warm himself.
