At what point does his confidence begin to weaken?

I would say probably after the man continues his journey after his second fire. He dries his foot out but when he continues, he discovers that the cold gets worse. By the time he decides to make camp he makes a major error in judgement (starts the fire under a tree). Then it is too late.
