J is the novel's narrator, as well as one of the main characters. Like George and Harris, Jerome is also a hypochondriac. Most people infer the character is based upon the author.

Jerome is described as a young, middle-class, man, who appreciates literature and has a keen interest in his country's history. He is a bit conceited, which becomes very apparent in the anecdotes he strategically places throughout the novel. None-the-less, he is also very witty.... and that is the quality I most admire.

It is a most extraordinary thing, but I never read a patent medicine advertisement without being impelled to the conclusion that I am suffering from the particular disease therein dealt with in its most virulent form.
