Jerome is the narrator of the book. He is young ,sinoel middle-class man who lives in London. He loves history and literature. He is a day dreamer also. He is fond of locks. He likes rafting and sailing. But he despises steam launches. He somtimes speas like a philosopher. He believes"Each person has what he doesn't want and other people have what he does want." His perception about work is reflected in the following expression: No man keeps his work in a better state of preservation than I do." He candidly confesses that he is not a good fisherman. He is advised that as poet or a shilling shocker or a reporter or anything of that kind he may be satisfactory but that to gain any position as a Thames angler would require more play of fancy morwith power of invention than he appears to possess. He likes sitting in the boat and slowly rising out of the cool depths up into new reaches and fresh views.
