Why did Jim and Harris think that George knew nothing about washing while on a trip?

George claimed that flannels could be washed in the river without a problem, and that he had friends who had easily done so. So, the men packed their flannels and washed them out in the river. Unfortunately, they were forced to come to the conclusion that George didn't know what he was talking about, but only after they'd ruined their clothing.
