What did George suggest at picnic point? What did they expect? How was it an under estimate?

The men plan to pull into Picnic Point, have a good supper, and go to sleep. George suggests they put the canvas up before eating because it won't take long...... he misjudged his timing by a long shot. Putting up the canvas took most of the day.
