George has two incidents in which the police are referred to. One, he wakes up in the middle of the night believing himself late for work. While walking around in the middle of the night, he makes the police suspicious as to what he is about.

George was also approached by the police after he begins practicing his banjo playing in the square, after being told he was disturbing other residents at home. A trap was set by the police to catch him, and he was sentenced to keep the peace for no less than six months. I see no evidence of his being gone for a week? Do you have a chapter number to accompany your question?
