From the text:

"Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need — a homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends, worth the name, someone to love and someone to love you, a cat, a dog, and a pipe or two, enough to eat and enough to wear, and a little more than enough to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing."

According to narrator boat of life should be packed lightly. We tend to accumulate trivial things but find no peace. We pile the poor little craft mass-high with fine clothes and big houses.

We should pack our boat with only what we need-homely home, simple pleasures, one or two friends ,someone to love and someone to love you, a cat ,a dog, a pipe or two , enough to eat and enough to wear and a little more to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing.
