Peculiar? No, I think Stivving's desire to study hard and be a credit to his parents is a normal goal that children should strive to accomplish. None-the-less, J. portrays him as rather odd in his habits (hypochondria, crying over missed work). Thus, we have to wonder whether his desire to excel might have been the culprit that made him sick to begin with.
