The men are spending an evening in J.'s room, smoking and discussing illnesses both imaginary and real. All of the men decide that they are suffering from 'overwork' and need a holiday THey decide that the fresh air and a little robust physical work will do them good. THey reject a sea trip because of what they had heard of bad experiences. THey decide on a "relaxing" holiday up the River Thames, from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford.
