The men were initially fascinated by the though of making stew, but it soon became too much of a chore. They had difficulty peeling the potatoes, added cabbage and peas, after which George felt there simply wasn't enough in the concoction. Thus, the men added "cracked eggs, potted salmon, some pork pie, peas and potatoes."

Before going to the Shiplake Islands, George suggested that as they have plenty of time, they should make an irish stew. It was a fascinating idea. George made a fire of wood, and Harris started peeling the potatoes. But, when the first potato was peeled, Harris's light-heartedness wa gone. The more he peeled, the more peel seemed to be left. Finally, when he finished peeling, all what was left was the size of a peanut. George then told him not to waste the potatoes but to scrape them. After much effort four potatoes were scraped and alongwith them, six washed unpeeled potatoes went into the cauldron. A cabbage, a pork pie, a potted salmon, two cracked eggs and half a peck of peas also found their way into the cauldron. Montmorency found a water rat nearby and brought it to the three men trying to make it a contribution to the stew, but George refuses to put it in. Later, when the stew was cooked, it had a unique flavour and was very nourishing.
