At the beginning of “The Darkling Thrush,” what is the mood of the speaker?

At the beginning of the poem, the speaker is somewhat depressed as he "leant upon a coppice gate/When frost was specter gray." He needs to be that way so that the sound of the thrush does give him some hope "of which I was unaware."
