From the text:

The bedroom light is on and the bamboo shutters are down. A spiderweb of silver duct tape holds the fractured window together. Was it a rock? Did someone throw a rock at Tyler’s window?

The broken window is symbolic of Clay's own fears. In his mind, he links the window to the tapes.

The second part of your question pertains to Side B. The end of this isde of the cassette is Clay's perspective.
