Okonkwo does not want change. His very narrow view of masculinity and personal validation are tied up in the traditions of his people.Okomkwo is also afraid of losing his social status that he has worked so hard to cultivate. The colonial interests and culture hit Okonkwo's people like a wave. There is no running away from it. Igbo people, long scorned in their own tribe, embrace Christianity and the self-worth it offers. European traditions make traditional farming techniques obsolete which severely changes the balance of power within the Igbo. Okonkwo cannot stop this change. Resistance is futile and not adapting only spells his eventual demise.
