They were largely a patriarchal culture. Men of mower had large yam fields and a number of wives and sons.

It was an agrarian based culture- Men grew yams, women grew coco-yams, cassavas and beans. These "women crops" were smaller. Women tended to the market.

Polygamy- Men had many wives, a symbol of both status and power.
