He certainly is a complicated character. Okonkwo is obsessed with the idea of manhood. I think outward possessions like land and his yam crops validate himself in his own eyes. Stature within the village and bravery in battle all make up the persona that Okonkwo clings to. Inside he cares for his family but his two worlds often clash. I think that the killing of his adopted son Ikemefuna is the beginning of the end for Okonkwo. The act which he felt would make him look strong ends up destroying him.
