What rumors spread about the white man? What is the importance of this?

Rumors that the white men intend to destroy all of the Igbo shrines spread through the village. There are also rumors that although the white man's religion comes first.... their government quickly follows. The villagers come to believe that their village has been chosen to be taken over by the white men..... as well as white authority.
