Uchendu explains that when a child is beaten by its father, it will look to its mother for comforting. In Okonkwo's case, he has been exiled from his fatherland and returned to his motherland. According to Uchendu, it is Okonkwo's duty to his wife and children to snap out of his depression and begin to live again..... if he doesn't, it is his family that will suffer.
