What is the signifcance of the word "twins" used in several parts of the book?

According to my search of the various chapters, the word starts in chapter 14; again in chapter 16, and so on.

I understand twin children but on occasions the word is used singularly.

Twins are considered two born at the same birth. According to Igbo custom, twins are considered evil and must be placed in earthenware pots and left to die in the forest.
