The Igbo society is an early form of democracy. There is no chief or specific leader, but rather a coalition of men chosen as a general assembly, which governs the people. The assembly is expected to oversee the villagers and administer justice. It is their job to avoid war and adhere to tradition. All decisions and negotiations are made by the group as a whole.
